A thought occurred to me yet again this evening---not a new thought, but one that I wanted to share. It's really very simple: My entire day seems to go more smoothly when I begin the day by spending time with the Lord---especially reading my Bible. This isn't to say that any of us ever has a day without problems---oh no! That's just part of being alive--we encounter some kind of problem or difficulty or hassle (or whatever you want to call it) every day. BUT, for me personally, I can HANDLE those pesky problems much better when I've begun my day with the Lord. ~ I'm sorry to say that some days I'm in such a "rush" to get things done, and I wait and read my Bible later in the day. From now on, I'm going to make a serious effort to begin every day by spending time with God first---after all, the Bible is the TRUTH, so if I want a guidebook for my day it's right there in a book on my desk. And that's the truth!

A Lasting Impression

Recently I finished reading another book by one of my all-time favorite Christian authors, Tamera Alexander. As always when I read her books, I was again reminded of why she is one of my VERY favorite authors! A Lasting Impression is a wonderfully written historical novel set in a real place: The Belmont Mansion in Nashville, Tennessee. The story takes place after the Civil War, as the nation is still healing amidst reminders of the terrible war. Tamera Alexander has an amazing writing talent that makes the reader feel as if you're really there---walking among the characters of the story, and viewing the gorgeous Belmont Mansion with your very own eyes! ~ I don't want to give any details away, but if you're a fan of historical fiction, be sure and read A Lasting Impression. Now I'm eager to read the other books coming out in this series!

A New Year---and a New Word

It's already January 9th---this New Year needs to slow down! At the beginning of each new year, I used to write out a list of "My New Year Resolutions"---basically I was re-writing the same ones each year *sigh*. But several years ago I noticed that some folks had chosen a word (or the Lord had placed that specific word on their heart)---and that was their WORD for the year. So I decided to try that rather than a list of repeated resolutions. ~ Last year my word was PERSEVERANCE. And....overall that's what I did: I persevered with my physical therapy, home projects, etc. (not that I completed everything, though!). This year I honestly felt that the Lord has been nudging me towards SELF-DISCIPLINE. Because if I want to improve on my writing, I absolutely HAVE to be disciplined and WRITE!! Not just when I feel like writing, but times even when I'd rather be doing something else (such as playing with my cats---or being entertained by them *smile*). ~ Do you have a word or goal(s) for the New Year? I pray that this new year will be safe and healthy for us all. ~ Shew me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths. Psalm 25:4

Wedding Bells and Christmas Bells

The month of December is especially joyous (and busy!) for my family this year. Earlier this month we were blessed to have my oldest daughter's Wedding, and the day was perfect! ~ Now we're preparing to celebrate Christmas---which is my most favorite holiday. Since I was so busy with wedding plans, I waited until after my daughter's wedding to really "dive into" my Christmas activities. But instead of feeling pressured and fretting about having everything done by a certain time, I've decided I'll keep doing the best I can, and really ENJOY the Christmas season. It really doesn't matter if some folks receive their Christmas cards a day or so after December 25, or if I don't get to bake quite as many cookies as I usually do. What matters is that I stay FOCUSED on the true meaning of this special time: Celebrating my Savior's birth! ~ And as I re-read the Christmas story from my Bible, I'm still in awe of what happened those many years ago---and so very thankful for that most precious Baby born in a stable. ~ For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:11

Return unto Him!

As I was searching for a particular Bible verse this morning, another verse caught my eye and seemed to "jump out" at me! I read and re-read this verse, and couldn't help but think how so many Scripture verses apply directly to our world today. This is from II Chronicles 30:9: ...for the Lord your God is gracious and merciful, and will not turn away His face from you, if ye return unto Him. ~ If you listen to the news, it can be downright frightening. Not only crime in your own city, but hearing about the strife among so many countries--and in particular--how certain countries are so against our U.S. ~ I feel very strongly that as Christians we need to pray earnestly for our country each day (and pray for our leaders!). And as the Scripture above states, we need to RETURN UNTO HIM!!! May I always do the best I can to pray for my country and live a life that honors my Lord.

Trivia Tuesday

To Have and To Hold

Historical romance is my absolute favorite genre to read (and write!). So I want to share another wonderful book I've recently read written by two wonderful authors I've had the honor of meeting in person (and they are both precious!). To Have and To Hold, co-written by Tracie Peterson and Judith Miller is set on the Georgia coast in the late 1800s. Since that happens to be my family's favorite vacation spot, this book was extra-special to me. The authors did a fabulous job of capturing the landscape of that area, and the characters "came alive" as I read the intriguing story set on a fictional island (near the real Jekyll Island). Tracie and Judy also did a fabulous job of providing a very good balance of action, romance, and even bits of suspense throughout the story. If you're a fan of historical fiction, be sure and look for To Have and To Hold (which has a GORGEOUS cover too!). Highly recommended!

Amazing Autumn (and some good books too!)

Even though each season is special, I must say that Autumn is my very favorite. Maybe because summers are so hot and humid where I live, and it feels so refreshing when the weather turns cool. Or it might be because the trees in my area turn beautiful shades of crimson, yellow and orange. But whatever the reason, I have to say that to me....Autumn is amazing! I'm always in awe of the Lord's handiwork in the Fall colors and the bright blue skies of October. ~ One thing I love to do in this season is read on my front porch. Feeling the crisp, cool breezes blowing and hearing my front-yard birds chirping create a relaxing atmosphere and I become totally immersed in a good book. Two good books I recently purchased are The Captain's Mission by author Debby Giusti, and Oklahoma Reunion by author Tina Radcliffe. Both of these are Love Inspired books, which releases new titles each month. Since these are October releases, they won't be around too long, so hurry to your local Walmart or bookstore to purchase them. Then find a relaxing spot and enjoy these books---and Autumn!

Author Sandra Orchard's First Book!

Christian author (and a dear friend of mine) Sandra Orchard has her debut novel out this month, and I'm so thrilled for her! Deep Cover is a romantic suspense published by Love Inspired and is available at many chain stores and bookstores (my local Walmart had several copies). I'm reading the book now and loving it! ~ Sandra is a wife, mother, and grandmother who lives in Ontario, and in addition to being an awesome author she's a sweetheart. She's also been (and continues to be) a wonderful encouragement to me in my own writing journey. ~ Look for Deep Cover now - - and also look for future Sandra Orchard suspense novels. A Whisper of Peace

Christian author Kim Vogel Sawyer continues to be one of my VERY favorite authors, so I wanted to share a book I've just finished reading. A Whisper of Peace is an excellent read---especially if you enjoy historical romance. ~ This story is set in Alaska in the late 1800s, and was never dull. I don't want to give any "spoilers" but I'll say it follows a missionary and a native young woman and the trials they experience. The characters, action, and the message of sweet redemption made this a wonderful story, which I highly recommend!

Fragrant Reminders

Isn't it amazing how a certain smell or scent can evoke memories for us? Of course, the happy memories are the ones we like (and the pleasant scents too!). Yesterday I was grocery-shopping and spied a loaf of cinnamon bread. I didn't purchase it, but had to pick it up and sniff it through the plastic--it looked sooo yummy. Sure enough, it smelled as yummy as it looked, and suddenly in my mind I was transported back to when my three children were little, and thoughts of the cozy house we lived in then. For some reason, that particular cinnamon-bread smell made me think of our kitchen and those happy times when my children were very young (I was blessed to be a "stay-at-home" Mom for a while). Maybe it's because I baked a good bit when the children and I were at home (which we were most of the time), but whatever the reason that's where my thoughts traveled as I stood in the middle of the bakery section of the store. When I realized I had tears in my eyes (*sigh* I'm such an emotional Mom) I hastily set the cinnamon bread back on the shelf and forced myself to focus on finishing my shopping. Thankfully no one I knew was in the store then, because they might've wondered why I had tears while shopping in the bakery! ~ Later yesterday I thought back to that very small incident in the store, and it made me realize just how powerful our senses can be. Is there a particular fragrance that makes you think of a sweet memory?

Surprise Seeds

Oh my! This summer has been zipping by way too quickly, and I cannot believe it's been over a month since I've posted a blog*sigh*. But I wanted to share about my "surprise seeds"---an old packet of seeds I found in May and decided to plant. Since they were old, I almost tossed the packet into the trash, but am SO glad I didn't! I planted them in an extra flower pot I had, watered them, and set them on my front steps so they'd receive lots of afternoon sun. A couple weeks later, I was thrilled to see tiny green plants peeking through the dirt. I continued to water them, and now--in late July--I'm very happy to say I have a lovely pot of bright yellow flowers! The picture above (a zinnia) is very similar to my flowers, so I'm thinking they must be in the zinnia family (I didn't save the packet they came in, but I remember the words "mixture" on the packet!). I've decided that these particular flowers have flourished in the bright sun on my front porch steps. As I thought about those words earlier today, it occurred to me that Christians can also flourish, but we "flourish in the SON"! If we strive to live the kind of life we should, and do what the Lord would have us to do, then we will surely flourish as we serve Him. So as I continue enjoying the lovely yellow flowers on my porch, I'll remember that I need to stay in the light of the Son, if I'm to truly flourish and live a fruitful life. ...as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. Psalm 103:15

One Year Ago....

It's hard to believe it has been exactly one year ago that I entered a major Atlanta hospital for what was supposed to be three spinal surgeries. Due to some serious complications, my neurosurgeon had to bring me out of anesthesia during the 3rd procedure, let me rest for five days, and then finish correcting my spine (resulting in a total of 4 surgeries in an 8-day period!). Yes, it was truly the roughest time I've ever been through. BUT....I wasn't alone. The Lord was with me the entire time, and I felt His presence beside me even during long, agonizing nights. I also knew there were countless people praying for me---not only precious family and friends, but folks I didn't even know! I am convinced those prayers helped me through that ordeal and through the long healing process after I returned home. God is sooo GOOD! ~ As rough as that time was, I look back now and see so many blessings that came during (and after) that time in my life. The care and kindness of not only family and friends, but also the hospital staff helped to ease the pain and fear during my hospital stay and recuperation. ~ As I prepared myself for that experience, I clung to a verse from the book of Isaiah. That verse will always be special to me, and I praise the Lord for His protection and comfort in all the trials of life. ~ Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. Isaiah 41:10

National Doughnut Day

YAY! At last, I have a legitimate excuse to eat my favorite: a creme-filled doughnut! Mmmmm.... ~ It's true that I've never met a doughnut I didn't like. Several years ago my husband made that comment about me, and although I laughed at the time, later I realized how very true his words were. ~ So if you're a doughnut-lover like me, go ahead and indulge today, and ENJOY every yummy bite!

May We Never Forget...

Since today is Memorial Day, I wanted to briefly share a thought that has been on my heart. So many of us (myself included) tend to take for granted our freedoms in this great country. We don't mean to, but we are so blessed with an excess of not only material possessions, but the freedoms we have everyday. As we honor the men and women who have served (and continue to serve) our United States of America, may we never forget the price so many have paid, so that we can continue to enjoy our freedoms and blessings. MAY GOD CONTINUE TO BLESS AMERICA!!!

The Officer's Secret

Christian author Debby Giusti has written a wonderful suspense book that I highly recommend! The Officer's Secret is a captivating story set at a fictional military base here in Georgia. Although I normally read historical and contemporary romance stories, I thoroughly enjoyed reading a suspense book. Debby Giusti's style of writing kept me turning pages and eager to see what happened next! ~ Even if you don't usually read suspense (and especially if you DO!) I'd encourage you to hurry and get this book while it's available (in my area the Walmart and Kroger stores carry it). The Officer's Secret is in the LOVE INSPIRED line of books, so should be easy to locate in your store. ~ On a personal note, Debby Giusti is not only a talented author but a precious lady (and prayer warrior!) as well. I look forward to reading many more of her books!

Sunflowers and Squirrels

I LOVE sunflowers!! And (this may sound crazy, I know)....I LOVE squirrels! Well, maybe I shouldn't say "love"---but I think they're cute, and I feed them well on my deck. After all, they entertain me with their antics as they chase each other and sprawl on my deck railing as if they're sunbathing. ~ Last year I planted some sunflower seeds in a nice, sunny spot in my backyard. Sadly nothing ever happened. I decided that some of the squirrels must've dug up the seeds for a meal, and I accepted the fact that the only sunflowers I'd ever have would be the artificial ones in my home (I use a "sunflower" theme in my kitchen).

About six weeks ago I noticed a weed growing in a large discarded flower pot on my deck. The pot is filled with dirt and had once housed a plant that's no longer with us, but I'd figured the large flower pot would be useful one day. I started to go out and pull the weed out of the dirt, but was curious as to how tall it would grow, so I let it be. Each week the "weed" grew taller, the stem sturdier, and the large green leaves seemed to be quite healthy. Could it be a sunflower? I looked on the internet at different types of sunflowers and compared the leaves with the ones in the pot on my deck. A few days later a beautiful sunflower bloomed in that flower pot---not a weed, but a SUNFLOWER!!! Needless to say, I was thrilled! I decided that perhaps my squirrels felt guilty about digging up my seeds last year, so they planted some seeds for me in that discarded pot. ~ More blooms have appeared, and it's been an unexpected blessing as I've enjoyed the gorgeous bright yellow blooms from my kitchen window. ~ This has reminded me of how the Lord gives us unexpected blessings in life. Sometimes when we least expect it, He blesses us in a special way. May I always be thankful for ALL my blessings, and may I remember to give thanks to Him!

Easter Blessings

I've always loved Easter, and always will. For the Christian, this holiday is the most wondrous of all---because we are reminded of the most wonderful news we could ever hope to hear: Our Saviour conquered death, and lives forever!!! And.....we will live forever with Him! It just doesn't get any better than that. ~ So today as I dyed Easter eggs with my precious children (a tradition we love) and went about my usual "day before Easter" activities, I made certain to keep these thoughts at the forefront of my mind: Christ triumphed over death, He loves me and has forgiven all my sins, and I will live forever with Him. Praise the Lord for these most precious blessings! ~ He is not here: for He is risen. Matthew 28:6

Christmas Cactus for Easter!

The first Christmas after my precious mother went to Heaven, some friends gave me a lovely Christmas Cactus. Since I love plants, I was thrilled (and had fond memories of the dozens and dozens of beautiful plants my mother had grown--including a Christmas Cactus). So, being determined to not only keep the plant alive but also get it to re-bloom, I made certain to keep it watered and have it setting in a prime spot to get the sun it needs. I was thrilled the first time it bloomed at Christmas, but then the plant went two years with no blooms. However, I was encouraged the next Thanksgiving when it again bloomed. ~ Now as we are in the Easter season, my Christmas Cactus has begun blooming again! I am thrilled, since the blooms are a gorgeous shade of fushia and are so pretty. (The picture I've included above isn't my plant, but mine is very similar---just a little larger!) ~ Every morning when I open the window blinds where that plant is setting, I praise the Lord for this little "unexpected gift" of beauty that brightens my day! ~ It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord....Psalm 92:1

Highly Recommended Reading!

Bethany House Publishing company recently sent me some books to read and review, and I wanted to share them with others. The first one is a compilation of works that inspired the life of A.W. Tozer and is titled: From The Library of A.W. Tozer compiled by James Stuart Bell. After I received this book in the mail, I became SO excited---it was like getting a "treasure chest" in the mail! This book is filled with inspiring, thought-provoking writings by great Christians such as D.L. Moody, Martin Luther, and John Wesley, just to name a few. I cannot wait to tell my Pastor about this wonderful book! ~ The other book I received is The Whole Bible Story by Dr. William H. Marty. I'm also excited about this book, as it tells the Bible story in "plain, simple English." The author explains in the Introduction that he hopes this book will encourage people to read the Bible, and I really believe it will. From Creation to Revelation, the Bible story is clearly written in this book. I'm looking forward to sharing this with family and friends!

MARCHing into Spring!

It's mid-March and the Spring season is definitely making an appearance here in Georgia (although according to the calendar it's not officially Spring yet!). Even though I can truthfully say I enjoy ALL 4 seasons, it's always so nice when our bare trees start displaying buds and blooms--not to mention daffodils popping up in clusters, the forsythia (yellow bell) bushes covered with buttery-yellow blooms, and the birds greeting me with a chirpy concert everytime I'm outside. I LOVE it!! Now that I'm no longer teaching school, I have much more time to appreciate each season--and notice all the "little things" that make each one so special. Not that I didn't enjoy the seasons when my life was hectic, but it is nice now to be able to just stop and breathe in all the signs of Spring! ~ Wherever you live, I wish you a wonderful Spring season--with many reasons to feel renewed and joyful. ~ The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth His handiwork. Psalm 19:1

Tombstone, Arizona

I recently read another delightful book by Christian author Miralee Ferrell, and highly recommend it. Love Finds You in Tombstone, Arizona takes place in 1881, and is filled with plenty of action, excitement, and romance. The author makes it easy to visualize the characters and scenery in your mind, and the ending of the story is very satisfying. I've read Miralee Ferrell's other books and have certainly enjoyed them, but this one is definitely my favorite of her books! ~ If you're a fan of historical romance, be sure to read Love Finds You in Tombstone, Arizona by Miralee Ferrell. You won't be disappointed!

Courting Miss Amsel

Christian fiction author Kim Vogel Sawyer has written another wonderful historical novel that I highly recommend. Courting Miss Amsel is a delightful read that I thoroughly enjoyed! The story takes place in Nebraska in 1882, and follows a small-town schoolmarm as she strives to do the very best job she can. Her trials and victories come alive on the pages---as do all the characters. The ending of this wonderful story left me thinking (yet AGAIN!) how much I enjoy ALL of Kim Vogel Sawyer's writing. She truly brings the past alive for her readers, and that's why she remains at the top of my "Favorite Authors" list!

Winter Thoughts

There have been lots of comments lately about the Winter weather. Here in Georgia we've had our share of cold, rain, and even some snow and ice. But I'm sure folks in other areas of the country would consider our "bad" weather very mild! Something I've noticed---both in conversations and on Facebook postings---is that many folks are just TIRED of Winter. They're ready for nicer, warmer weather and Spring! And I must confess that I'm also really looking forward to seeing my trees have buds and green leaves, my azalea bushes flowering, and slightly warmer temperatures. ~ However, I'm reminded of my precious late Mama's words when I was younger: Don't wish your life away by being in such a hurry! ~ So I know it's fine to anticipate our lovely Georgia Springtime, but meanwhile I'll enjoy each day of Winter that remains---and know that God is in control and He has a purpose for each season. ~ To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. Ecclesiastes 3:1

Thanksgiving in January

Yesterday when writing a check in the grocery store, the date seemed to startle me: January 28! Already the month of January is almost gone for this year--how can that be? Didn't we just have Christmas? ~ Later in the day I once again thought about how quickly this month is zipping by, and I also thought about the different "types" of days I've experienced this month. There have been many "sunshine" days--when I've enjoyed special times with family or friends, or received a good report from my doctor. But there have also been "dreary" days--when my physical state and emotions seemed to match the gray, dreary weather we were having that day. But I always have to remember that if we never had those dreary days, we wouldn't fully appreciate the sunshine! ~ So I must remember to be thankful even for the dreary days and make the most of them, because every day is special and a gift from God. So I will try to greet each morning with a thankful heart and make the most of that day--whether the sun is shining or not!

An "Event-FULL" Year

Christmas Greetings! It's hard to believe today is December 26 and a new year is just around the corner. Whew! 2010 has really flown by for me, and I've heard others say the same thing. ~ As I reflect over this past year, I realize my family had many major events! In May my middle child graduated college and my baby graduated high school! SO proud of both kiddos (thankfully they're much smarter than their mother!). ~ After being out of work for almost a year, my husband was hired by another company in June---which was a tremendous blessing! ~ In late June I had 4 spinal surgeries in an 8-day period at a major Atlanta hospital. Although that was the most difficult thing I've ever experienced, I saw the Lord's hand at work in so many ways, and numerous blessings have come out of that experience. ~ My middle child got her first teaching job and moved out in July, then in August we moved our baby into his dorm at college (a very emotional time for me---but again, the Lord's hand was at work throughout all of this). ~ November was very special for our family as our middle child married in a beautiful, sweet wedding. We adore our son-in-law and their wedding day was perfect! And again we knew the Lord had blessed us abundantly. ~ Now as we enjoy the Christmas season we are again reminded of how very blessed we are. And as I think of the various events of this past year---both the happy and difficult---I know without a doubt the Lord was with us in everything---just as He will be in the coming year. What a comforting thought! ~ May you have the peace of knowing whatever events you experience, the Lord is there with you.

In Every Heartbeat

Author Kim Vogel Sawyer has written yet another historical fiction book that I loved! Set shortly before World War I, In Every Heartbeat tells the story of three friends who grew up in the same orphanage and have gone off to college together. As in all of Kim's books, the events are never predictable! Her characters always come alive for me, and when I have to stop reading I look forward to "jumping back" into the story to see what happens. Fans of historical fiction and romance will enjoy this (and ALL of!) Kim Vogel Sawyer's books. Her books not only entertain, but offer messages of the hope we have when we have Christ in our life.

Wedding Countdown!!!

Seems like she and Shaun (her wonderful fiance we adore) just became engaged. ~ As I look back over their years of dating, I truly see the Lord's hand at work. He could not have brought a young man into our daughter's life who we'd love more than we love Shaun. In fact, I already consider him as my "4th child"! In spite of the busyness and sometimes "headaches" of planning a large wedding and reception, I try to stay focused on the fact that this event will truly be a blessing, and afterwards I feel certain we'll have happy memories to cherish for years. I am truly blessed!!! Thank you Lord.

Within My Heart

Since I am a fan of historical fiction, I love the books written by Christian author Tamera Alexander. Her latest release, Within My Heart, was another delightful story that transported me back to Colorado in the late 1800s. This author's style of writing always sweeps me into her stories and I thoroughly enjoy them so much that I don't want them to end! And at the end of Within My Heart, I let out a "sigh" of satisfaction, as I do when I finish each book by Tamera Alexander. The setting, characters, and events kept me turning pages and not wanting the story to end. I highly recommend reading this book, and feel certain you'll enjoy it as much as I did!

Weeds...or Daisies?

On my deck sits an older flower pot--which used to hold a house plant. Sadly, the plant succumbed to some type of plant disease, so we sat the dirt-filled pot out on the deck- - ( I keep thinking that maybe one day I'll need it to re-pot one of my growing plants). As summer came to an end, I noticed tall stems growing up in the deserted pot--which I assumed were weeds. About two weeks ago as I glanced out my back door onto the deck, I noticed those tall stems now have lovely bright yellow blooms. Daisies!! Well...maybe not, but they could certainly "pass" for daisies! They are really pretty and definitely cheerful-looking. So I've decided even if they are some type of weed, they still add a pleasant touch of color to my deck (which needs painting!). ~ Thinking about this plant encouraged me to compare it to my life: Am I like a "weed" or a "daisy" to others? Do I just take up space and not really do anything, or do I "bloom" and brighten other peoples' days? I would hope that even in some small way I can uplift those around me....just as those "daisies" do when I look out my back door!

Finally feels like Fall !

It's almost mid-October, and here in my part of Georgia we've been having warm temperatures---until today! Finally, the air is cool and there's a strong breeze blowing, and even some of the trees in my backyard are beginning to gradually turn shades of yellow and orange (with some red peeking through). ~ Although each season has its own special beauty, Fall has been my very favorite season for years. Mainly because of the cooler air and the beautiful leaves---but also I just seem to feel better in the Fall! ~ As I looked out my window this morning and noticed more leaves were changing color, I couldn't help but reflect on the Bible verse from Psalm 19: The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth His handiwork. ~ May I never take for granted the beauty that God has created!

Staying on Track: Lessons from a Zipper!

As I sat by my bay window this morning, enjoying bright Georgia sunshine and working on my latest needlepoint project, I realized the zipper on my needlepoint bag had gotten off the track. I hoped it wasn't actually broken, as I really enjoy using the bag and use it a LOT! My husband gave it to me about 8 years ago to keep my current needlepoint project(s), yarn, and scissors in, and not only is it cute, but it's handy to carry around--and has been on quite a few vacations with me! Anyway, I hastily attempted to restart the zipper, hoping to get it on track. In my haste, I hadn't returned the zipper to the edge of the bag (in other words, the beginning of the "zipper track"). So in my hurrying I wasn't helping a thing - - the bag still remained open and my yarn was falling out. Then I realized the problem: I had to start the zipper at the very edge--or very beginning--of the zipper track. Once I slowed down and did that, the zipper worked perfectly, my bag now stays closed, and the yarn doesn't fall out! ~ I couldn't help but think how my life is kind of like that zipper: When I get "off track" (try to handle things myself and don't spend enough time in God's Word) it's like trying to close my sewing bag with a messed-up zipper - - useless! BUT....when I stay "on track" by spending time with the Lord and seeking His guidance for my life, things flow so much easier - - just like a zipper that is doing its job! May I always strive to stay ON TRACK and follow God's leading and direction for my life.

Christian fiction author Kim Vogel Sawyer has done it again---written yet another book that I LOVED !! Kim's "gentle stories of hope" are a pleasure to read, and I always know I'll be drawn into the lives of her characters and feel that I've stepped back in time as I get caught up in the events of the story. ~ A Hopeful Heart is set in 1888 in a small Kansas town, and follows the life of a young woman who traveled from the east coast to attend a "herdsman school"--a program that teaches young women necessary skills to become a rancher (or the wife of one!). This story held a few surprises for me, and included its fair share of action and romance. Most importantly, A Hopeful Heart demonstrates the amazing power of God at work in lives, and the changes that can occur when people follow the Lord's will for their lives. I highly recommend this book, and ANY of Kim Vogel Sawyer's books!

Finding Jeena

Christian author Miralee Ferrell has written another book that I thoroughly enjoyed. Finding Jeena is a contemporary novel that tells the story of a young woman who "had everything" according to the world's standards. When some unexpected circumstances completely changed her life, Jeena eventually realizes what is really important. ~ The characters in this story were very believable, and I must admit there were parts of the book that had me reaching for the kleenex. Most importantly, Finding Jeena shows how the Lord works to change and soften hearts of even some of the toughest unbelievers. ~ I highly recommend this book, and look forward to reading more of Miralee Ferrell's work!

Okay, I'll admit it: I love reading blogs! Not just any blogs, but Christian author blogs. Since reading (and writing!) Christian fiction are two of my most favorite activities, naturally I enjoy reading posts from Christian fiction authors about their lives, latest works, etc. ~ Although I have quite a few that I read and enjoy, if I had to pick just one "VERY favorite" it would be the Writes of Passage blog written by five wonderful historical fiction authors. These ladies (Robin Lee Hatcher, Tamera Alexander, Judith Miller, Kim Vogel Sawyer, and Tracie Peterson) are ALL amazing authors and great Christian ladies. A Feast for the Eyes

One day recently as I was heading out of my neighborhood to run a few errands, the phrase "a feast for the eyes" came to mind. The reason for that particular phrase was because of the absolute beauty displayed in my area right now. We are having a gorgeous Springtime---many of our trees have been covered in blooms and many flowers are also blooming. The redbud, Bradford Pear, and Yoshino Cherry trees have been especially lovely this year, and now many yards have bright, cheerful tulips blooming. Isn't it wonderful how the Lord has our seasons perfectly planned? Each season possesses its own special beauty, but after bare trees in the Winter we seem to appreciate the blooms of Spring even more. ~ Although my vision is not perfect, I am so thankful I have eyes to see the beauty of each season, and enjoy the "feast" my Lord so graciously gives me.

Lovable Levi

Anyone who knows me knows that I love ALL of my cats! They each have a unique personality and are special in their own way (like people!). But of my six cats, without a doubt the most "laid back" kitty is Levi, my gorgeous fluffy white cat. I have never seen a cat quite so easy-going as Levi. Most of the time, my kitties all get along.....however, now and then one of the older female cats decides to "show who's boss" and will strike out at another cat. When this happens to Levi, he never strikes back, but just turns his head away and tries to avoid being pawed (or clawed) again. ~ In addition to his relaxed demeanor, Levi also has a tendency to sometimes go where he shouldn't be. I'm certain he's not trying to misbehave---he's just a curious cat! He's strictly an "indoor kitty" but sometimes if someone goes in/out our front door, Levi slips out in a flash. We always groan, because he often gets under our front porch and then has difficulty squeezing back out through the lattice-work. He also likes to investigate the contents of my cabinets, and the other day he even hopped on top of our refrigerator! When he does these activities, I playfully scold him and call him a "stinker" - - but love him anyway. ~ I was thinking the other day about how much God loves me - - even when I'm a "stinker" and don't do exactly as I should. And as much as I dearly love Levi and my other kitties, I know without a doubt God loves me MUCH MUCH MORE!!! So as I try to train Levi to stay out of cabinets, I'm also working on making sure I do what's pleasing to the Lord.

Winter Wonderland

Here in my part of Georgia, we don't get very much snow, and when we receive any at all it's a "pretty big deal"! Recently my area received about six inches, and it was BEAUTIFUL!!! I do not ever remember seeing that much snow in my life, and I felt like a little kid again. Being extremely careful not to slip and fall (and injure my already ailing back), I walked around outside, scooping up handfuls of the fluffy stuff. It was pristine white and powdery, and gorgeous. The few times I was outside, it happened that no one else in my neighborhood was out at the same time. So everything was peaceful and white---a true Winter Wonderland! I was reminded that the very same God who creates the lovely autumn leaves and colorful blooms in spring and summer also creates winter beauty, and He did a magnificent job! Even my cats were amazed at the transformation of our front and back yards into a winter wonderland!

Being a fan of Christian historical romance, I love reading a book that helps me to easily visualize in my mind a certain area during an earlier time. Christian author Miralee Ferrell has done an excellent job with her book Love Finds You in Bridal Veil, Oregon! The story is a sweet romance filled with believable characters from the past, and plenty of action (and a little mystery!) so the reading is never dull. The faith message is woven throughout the story in such a meaningful way---yet never "preachy". ~ When I visit Oregon one day (it's on my "Wish List") I would love to actually see Bridal Veil Falls for myself---even though I've already visited "in my mind"---thanks to this wonderful book!

Today is the birthday of my favorite Christian fiction author, Kim Vogel Sawyer!! I have had the pleasure and honor of meeting Kim at a writers' conference, and she is not only a fabulous author, but a very kind lady too (AND...she LOVES CATS!! What more could you want?!!). ~ Seriously, Kim is a sweet, gracious lady and she uses her God-given talent to write some wonderful, touching books. "Gentle stories of hope" is the phrase she uses to describe her stories, and that is so appropriate. Her stories are not only entertaining, but show the HOPE we can have when we know the Lord and allow Him to work in our lives. ~ The most recent Kim Vogel Sawyer book I read was Fields of Grace. I absolutely loved this historical story, and highly recommend it. Of course, I highly recommend ANY book written by Kim - - once I begin reading, I get "swept up" in the lives of her characters. ~ ~ So, HAPPY BIRTHDAY dear Kim!! May the Lord continue to pour out His blessings on you, sweet friend!

Don't Be Afraid

Anyone who knows me (or sees me walk) realizes I have major back problems. I've actually been diagnosed with six conditions in my back, including scoliosis, spinal stenosis, and severe arthritis, among other conditions. As painful as my back problems are, I count my blessings daily and am thankful I can still "get around" and drive. ~ Recently my doctor sent me to a spinal specialist, who described in detail the spinal surgery I need to have done. The surgery would take twelve hours, I'd be in Intensive Care, need rehab, and complete recovery could take up to twelve months. Needless to say, I left that appointment feeling disheartened, discouraged, and terrified. Now, I'm no stranger to surgeries. I've been through more than a few, and "survived" just fine. But this particular spinal surgery would undoubtedly be the most major of any surgery I've had. However, according to the doctors, if I don't have it, my spine will eventually press against a lung, causing difficulty breathing. So I feel it's something that I must do. ~ The more I thought about the doctor's words, the more I realized I must leave this in the Lord's hands. He will be with me through the surgery and recovery process, I am certain. ~ The next day I was flipping through my Bible to resume my daily reading, and a verse in Mark caught my eye: Be not afraid, only believe. YES!! So simple, but that's exactly what I need to do! I must believe the Lord will see me through whatever the future holds, so there's no need to fear. What a wonderful, comforting thought. Thank You, Lord!!!

A New Year = New Ways to Serve!

Happy New Year! Like many other folks, I am amazed at how quickly this past year flew by. Now we are starting a fresh, new year: 2010 ! This year, instead of writing down my "usual" list of New Year's Resolutions as I've done the past 20 years (gasp!), I felt led to focus instead on New Ways to Serve. What are some new ways I can serve the Lord? Rather than ME deciding on the answer, I am praying for the Lord to show me exactly what He wants me to do. I will certainly continue being a prayer warrior, and will strive to pray more for those around me. I'll also continue doing the "little things" I feel called to do (sending cards to brighten someone's day, taking breakfast to my Pastor and staff, etc.). But I will be open to the Lord's leading of other ways I can serve Him by serving others, whatever those activities may be.
Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established.

Preparing for Christmas

December is here, and the days fly quickly by. The Christmas season always seems to be a very hectic time for most of us, and we see/hear the word "stress" quite a bit (sadly). Earlier today as I was bringing decorations up from my basement, I thought about many things I still need to do for Christmas (including more shopping and sending Christmas cards!). But a thought occurred to me as I was looking through boxes of ornaments and wrapping paper: The most important preparation I can do for Christmas is to prepare my heart. The oft-heard statement "Jesus is the Reason for the Season" is much more than a phrase for people to wear on pins. This statement is an all-important reminder of WHY we have this wondrous holiday each year on December 25. We are celebrating our Savior's birth!!! What a joyous thought! So no matter what activities we feel we must accomplish these next few weeks, we need to prepare our hearts to welcome the precious Baby who was born in a lowly manger. And remember the REASON He was born: To save us!!! So instead of being so overwhelmed with the world's ideas of what we should be doing, I want to make certain my heart is prepared to rejoice over my Savior's birth!! ~ ~ I am attaching a picture of my cat Moses as he "helped" me unpack a tub of Christmas items!

Love Finds You in Holiday, Florida by Christian author Sandra D. Bricker is a delightful book! The story follows a middle-aged widow (Cassie) who has returned to Florida to sell the vacation home her late husband loved. While there, Cassie meets a widower, and sees her life change in ways that truly surprise her. Ms. Bricker has written a story with romance, humor, and a cast of characters who are believeable and entertaining! I highly recommend Love Finds You in Holiday, Florida for a very enjoyable read.

The Carousel Painter

I recently finished reading a book by Christian author Judith Miller, and I actually felt a little sad that the story had ended! To me, that's the sign of a good book - - when I would like to continue reading about these characters and see what happens in their futures. The Carousel Painter by Judith Miller is wonderful, and I highly recommend it. Taking place in Ohio in the late 1800s, Judith's characters really "came alive" for me as I read. This author does an amazing job with her characters' distinct personalities, and she also adds some bits of humor throughout the story too. I was never "bored" reading this book - - in fact, when I'd have to stop reading to tend to something else, I couldn't wait to return to this story. If you're a fan of historical fiction, read The Carousel Painter. You won't be disappointed!!

A few weeks ago I attended the American Christian Fiction Writers conference in Denver, Colorado. I had attended this same conference last year (held in Minnesota) and the experience was SO wonderful, I knew this year's conference couldn't possibly be any better. WOW! I was mistaken! For me personally, the conference this year was even MORE AMAZING....the Lord worked in such wonderful ways to bless me, I was constantly in awe of His goodness! I made new friends, visited with folks I'd met last year, and the Lord provided opportunities to talk with Editors - - even more than I'd planned on. ~ An added bonus was once again having my precious daughter Amy along with me. Such a special "mother/daughter" time together! ~ Perhaps the most amazing thing was our flight home. The plane was almost full when I made our online reservations, so Amy and I had seats at opposite ends of a row. We weren't thrilled about that, as we're used to sitting next to each other. ~ A precious couple from our church was also on that flight (they'd attended a wedding in Colorado) and as it turned out, their seats were beside ours! So, we were able to swap, so they sat together, and Amy and I sat together. Once again, I knew that was NOT "coincidence" but the Lord at work!! He is AMAZING!! Enjoying the Drive

When I was still teaching school a few years ago, I didn't particularly enjoy my daily drive to and from my school. At the time I had two children in school, and we were always rushing---getting to their schools, and then I'd hurry on to mine to be ready to greet my roomful of kindergarten children. I loved my teaching job, but it seemed my life was a constant whirlwind - - always hurrying. Quite a few times I'd commented to family members and friends that I wished we lived closer to the schools, and I even reached the point where I'd say "I detest that drive!"~ ~ Now, several years later, due to a very bad back I am no longer teaching. My "baby" is now a high school senior, and I view that very same drive across the county each day with an entirely different perspective. Instead of seeing the drive as a "hassle," I'm viewing it as extra time with my child. Yes, he can drive, but I'd much rather take him each day (there are too many reckless-driving young people on those roads). Besides, I keep reminding myself that this time next year my son will be in college, and I know I'll actually miss those daily drives together. ~ ~ This thought just occurred to me last week: The very same activity I'd felt grumbly about in the past is now something I treasure! It's all in the perspective. ~ ~ I am reminded of the verse in 1 Thessalonians: In everything give thanks. ~ So I am giving thanks for this added time with my precious son, while he's still living at home, and I'm also noticing some lovely scenery along the way that I hadn't noticed a few years ago!

Singin' in the Rain...

A few days ago I was out running errands in our Georgia heat and humidity. There were a few clouds in the sky, but I really thought the weather would stay clear all afternoon. As I pushed my shopping cart (or "buggy" as we say here in the South!) to my car, I noticed the sky had quickly become an ominous gray. The instant I arrived at my car to load the groceries into it, the rain began. Only it wasn't just some raindrops falling down - - oh no, it was a DOWNPOUR, in every sense of the word! It was as if someone had a giant bucket, dumping water onto the Kroger parking lot. Not only that, but the wind began to blow strongly....so the rain was now blowing into my car as I loaded the groceries. Before I was even halfway finished putting the groceries in, I realized I was DRENCHED! I'm sure I looked as if I'd just stepped out of a swimming pool, fully clothed and dripping. ~ At that moment, I felt like a kid again, and I began to giggle. Then I laughed, continuing to place groceries in the car while wiping water out of my eyes. I know I must have looked silly - - laughing by myself and at myself - - but I knew there was no point in being aggravated at getting soaked. ~ On the drive home, I couldn't resist putting in a music CD of old classic movie themes. So of course I played "Singin in the Rain" as I drove home....and laughed some more! ~ ~ A favorite verse from Proverbs 17:22 - A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones. ~ ~ May I always have a merry heart!

BLESSINGS

After recently reading the book Blessings, by wonderful Christian author Kim Vogel Sawyer, I was struck with the thought of that oft-heard phrase, "Count your blessings." We hear a lot about being thankful and counting blessings around Thanksgiving time, but shouldn't we be just as thankful ALL year long? I decided to make a determined effort to really count my blessings each and every day - - not just mentally "listing them" but truly having a thankful heart. After all, the Lord didn't have to bless me as much as He did, but since I am so very blessed, I should be continually thanking Him!

Books by Cheryl Wyatt

Christian author Cheryl Wyatt has written some wonderful books for the Steeple Hill Love Inspired line, and I recently read two of them. A Soldier's Reunion and Ready-Made-Family are both in the WINGS OF REFUGE series, and I highly recommend them. ~ These contemporary romances feature themes such as forgiveness and trust, and show how God can help people overcome major obstacles in their lives. Cheryl's characters are very believable, and there is a sprinkling of humor throughout the stories too. ~ I wasn't familiar with pararescue jumpers and the amazing jobs they do until reading Cheryl's books. Cheryl does an awesome job using these *heroes and their loved ones in her stories, and I look forward to reading more of her books!

Spring Cleaning in my Heart

As long as I can remember, I've heard people use the phrase "Spring cleaning" each year (especially in the months of April and May). It's a great concept, and who would argue that a sparkling clean home doesn't make the occupants feel better?! ~ But I recently had a thought, that in addition to having a thorough cleaning and de-cluttering in my home, I should also have this in my heart. This may sound silly to some folks: Spring cleaning in your HEART?? ~ For me, this just means "cleaning out" negative thoughts and habits that are cluttering up my heart - - which in turn affect my mind. I'll admit I've always been a worrier, so that's definitely something I need to "toss"! If I eliminate worry from my heart and mind and replace it with TRUST, PEACE, and PRAISE, what a difference that would make. Instead of fretting over situations in which I have no control, I would pray - - trusting the Lord to take care of the situation. This in turn gives me peace, and I can praise the Lord.....knowing He is in control! ~ I pray all my family and friends are having a wonderful Spring season - - filled with peace as you enjoy the beauty of this marvelous season (even if you haven't cleaned your house yet!!).

Treasure Island, Florida

I recently finished reading the book Love Finds You in Treasure Island, Florida by Christian author Debby Mayne, and I now hope to visit Treasure Island myself one day! Using an actual location, Debby has created an enjoyable story with believable characters and a strong faith element. I enjoy stories that are not predictable, and that was certainly the case for this book! The characters' unique personalities and various situations throughout the story kept me turning pages. The ending was delightful, and now I look forward to reading more of Debby Mayne's books. ~ If you are a fan of contemporary Christian romance, you will enjoy reading Love Finds You in Treasure Island, Florida by Debby Mayne.

BEYOND THIS MOMENT

I recently finished reading the historical fiction book Beyond This Moment by Christian author Tamera Alexander, and it was WONDERFUL. I was so moved by this story that as soon as I finished the ending, I hurried to my computer and sent Tamera a message. ~ This is the second book in the Timber Ridge Reflections series, and is set in the Colorado territory in the 1870s. The story follows a newly-arrived teacher, Molly Whitcomb, and James McPherson, the sheriff of Timber Ridge, and also includes many believable secondary characters. God's hand at work is demonstrated as events unfold and characters learn important truths. ~ Tamera has the amazing gift of writing in such a way that allows the reader to get completely involved in the characters' lives, and you feel as if you're there witnessing the events happen. ~ I've read and thoroughly enjoyed all of Tamera's books, but Beyond This Moment is now my VERY favorite!! Fans of historical fiction will enjoy and appreciate this touching story of love and forgiveness. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !! : )

Eating Fried Okra in a Stranger's Driveway

Okay, I know my title looks rather strange...but if you read this post, you'll understand! ~ Being a true Southerner, I LOVE fried okra, and back in January decided I was really hungry for some. One Sunday afternoon my son Steven needed to work on a school project at a friend's house, so we decided I would pick up some fried chicken and okra (he loves it too) on my way back to get him after the project work was finished. It was a blustery cold January afternoon, and I was really looking forward to getting back home and "digging in" to that yummy meal. ~ I had driven Steven to this particular friend's house on several occasions, so I knew right where the boy lived. As I was heading down the street, I called on my cell phone to let Steven know I was there, but the boys weren't quite finished yet. I told him it was no problem---I had a book to read in my car, and they could take their time (after all, I certainly wanted them to get a good grade on this project!). I pulled down into the circular driveway of the boy's house and turned off my car. I noticed two other vehicles parked in the driveway too and assumed they belonged to other boys working on the project. Since I was parked about ten feet in front of a large window, I knew it would be easy for Steven to glance out and see just where I was parked. ~ I bundled up in my winter coat and opened up my new copy of Tamera Alexander's wonderful book From A Distance (which, by the way, is awesome--in case you haven't read it. Tammy is a super-talented Christian author!!). As I began reading, I decided to go ahead and munch on some fried okra....the aroma had been tempting me! I was quite content, all cozy as I read and munched away on the fried okra. ~ About ten minutes later my cell phone rang, and it was Steven. "Mom, where are you?" I immediately figured he and his friends were trying to play a joke on me, as if they couldn't see my car right there in front of a window! I calmly replied I was sitting in his friend's driveway, waiting for him. "Mom, no you're not." Okay, I guess these boys were going to be persistent in trying to fool me today. "Honey, I'm sitting right here just ten feet in front of their house." After a slight pause, Steven's voice calmly spoke. "Mom, you're at a house down the street. Just stay where you are and I'll walk to your car." WHAT??!! Sure enough, I glanced back up the street and saw my son, walking in the howling January wind down the street to meet me, and I wondered ---WHOSE house was I parked in front of? I immediately put my van in reverse and backed out of the driveway, running over the curb in the process. Without a word, I picked Steven up at the curb, and scooted out of that neighborhood. HOW had I gone to the wrong house? And what must those people have thought, if they glanced out their front window and saw a STRANGER sitting in their driveway, reading a book and eating fried okra?! Thankfully Steven didn't question me or make any comments about what I'd done---I guess he's used to his mother by now. Besides, he was hungry and enjoyed getting started on the fried chicken and okra as I drove us back home. ~ How do I do such silly things sometimes? I honestly don't mean to - - these things just happen to me. ~ Lately I've been thinking perhaps I should buy one of those bumper stickers that reads: Embarrassing my children.....Just one more service I offer : )

Happy St. Patrick's Day! I've always gotten a little amused, because on this special day lots of folks "claim" some Irish descent. I happen to be among them-LOL! From what I was told as a child, there truly is some Irish blood on my Mother's side of the family. Now that I have 3 redhaired children, they could certainly pass for having Irish heritage! ~ When I taught kindergarten, St. Patrick's Day was always a fun time with the children. A leprechaun would "visit" my classroom while we were on the playground, and he would leave little notes for us---along with making some harmless "messes" in our classroom. The children loved searching for him, and then discovering the "gold" he left for us (chocolate candy wrapped in gold foil). ~ I have also enjoyed reading the history of why this holiday was started, and the Christian heritage of St. Patrick. Whatever you're doing on this day, I hope you're having a blessed day filled with sunshine. * I'm including a picture of Sweetums as she celebrated St. Patrick's Day last year!*

A PROMISE FOR SPRING

I've just finished reading another book by Christian author, Kim Vogel Sawyer, and LOVED this story! A Promise for Spring is set in Kansas in the 1870's and tells the story of a young English woman trying to adjust to life on a sheep ranch. Her fiance asks her to stay until spring; if she's still unhappy then, he will pay her fare back to England. ~ As she always does, Kim Vogel Sawyer writes in such a way that you are drawn into the events of the story and feel the emotions of the characters. A Promise for Spring also shows amazing ways God can work --touching a hardened heart and using situations that appear hopeless to result in a positive outcome. ~ Kim Vogel Sawyer was already one of my VERY favorite authors, and after reading this book I am once again reminded of why I love her writing style. If you are a fan of historical romance, you should read A Promise for Spring by Kim Vogel Sawyer. HIGHLY recommended! : )

The "Babies" are One Year Old!!

I cannot believe it's been an entire year since a stray Calico cat had her four kittens on my front porch! Animals are much smarter than many people realize....this Calico knew whose porch she needed to use as a "maternity ward". Anyone who knows me at all knows I am the "ultimate CAT person" - LOL! Even though I already had several cats, I certainly couldn't turn away this sweet Calico (now named Patches).

The original plan was to keep one kitten and find excellent homes for the other three....but after tearfully placing one white kitten (Simon) with a loving owner, I just never found homes for Levi, Delilah, and Moses. SO.....Patches and the three remaining kittens happily live in my home now - - along with two older cats. Yes, they're a LOT of work (especially the litter box cleanings) but they are so worth it. I cannot imagine a home with no kitties now! Happy Birthday Babies!!

Last Chance, California

I recently finished reading another book from Summerside Press, Love Finds You in Last Chance, California by Christian author Miralee Ferrell and LOVED it !! This well-written, entertaining story is set in 1877 and centers around a young woman who suddenly inherits a ranch when her beloved father dies. She's determined to be successful, but realizes she needs help. A young wrangler comes into town, along with his very young son, and is soon hired to work on the ranch. ~ Lots of action, mysteries, and a developing romance kept me turning pages. The way Miralee describes the characters and settings made me feel that I was actually "watching" the story....it really came alive for me, and I love that in a book! I can honestly say I was sorry to reach the end of this book - - I wanted to continue reading about these characters. ~ I highly recommend Love Finds You in Last Chance, California by Miralee Ferrell for a delightful, never-dull book!

Humble, Texas

I've recently finished reading another book from Summerside Press, Love Finds You in Humble, Texas by Christian author Anita Higman, and I definitely recommend this book. I enjoyed Anita's style of writing, and if I had to choose one word to describe this book, it would be: ENTERTAINING ! I was never "bored" while reading the story, and I especially liked the bits of humor Anita used in her characters' thoughts. Love Finds You in Humble, Texas tells a present-day story of two sisters who are in love with the same man. As I read I was never sure exactly what would happen next, which of course kept me reading and interested! Anita's characters are realistic, and the faith message is woven in throughout the story (without being "preachy"). The secondary characters are even interesting too, which made the story all the more a pleasure to read. ~ If you're looking for an entertaining Christian book, read Love Finds You in Humble, Texas by Anita Higman. Now I'm looking forward to reading more of the Summerside Press "Love Finds You" books, AND more books by Anita Higman!! : )

Remembering Daddy

Two years ago today (January 22) my precious Daddy went to Heaven. Although he had been quite ill, we all expected him to recover, as he had always done in the past. He was a survivor, and we expected him to survive his health issues that had begun just a matter of weeks before his passing. Over the years, he had overcome some major heart problems, prostate cancer, and other serious conditions. I firmly believe one reason is because he wanted to be here for us: He was ALWAYS the Daddy! He felt his job was to take care of his family, no matter how old his daughters were. When we'd do things for him, he would always say: "It's not your job to do for me; I'm the daddy---I'm supposed to do things for you!" ~ A graduate of Georgia Tech, my Daddy was the smartest man I've ever known, and as a hospital volunteer said shortly before his death: "Your father is a walking encyclopedia of knowledge." I couldn't agree more.~ By the world's standards, my Daddy wasn't a wealthy man, but by his standards, he was. He loved his family so much, and he also loved animals. (He had five cats at the time of his death). It was very hard after my sweet Mama passed away (they'd been married almost 64 years!) but Daddy's cats were his companions. Over the years, whenever a stray cat or dog wandered into the yard, Daddy made sure the animal was fed and cared for. He loved wildlife too, and sent many donations to help care for sick or injured wild animals, in addition to the Humane Society. ~ But the most important thing about my Daddy was that he truly loved the Lord, and so now we have the comfort and peace of knowing Daddy is in Heaven, and we'll see him (and Mama!) again one day.

Wow! I've heard lots of folks commenting about how quickly 2008 flew by, and I agree. Although my days are not nearly as hectic as they used to be since I'm no longer teaching school, the time still seems to slip away too fast. ~ It's really made me stop and think lately about where my time "goes." As Christians, we are called to be good stewards of our time, and I'll be the first to admit that time management is something I've struggled with for quite a while. As we welcome a brand-new year, I'm praying for the Lord to help me use my time wisely. Due to my back condition, routine tasks often take longer than they used to, and that is frustrating at times. But I want to focus on the most important tasks this year, and do those things first. ~ I pray that all my family and friends are blessed with a safe, healthy, happy 2009, and that we'll always put the Lord first in our actions and thoughts. Happy New Year!! ~ (I'm including a picture of Sweetums as she celebrated New Year's Eve last year!).

Christmas Miracles

It's Christmas Eve and I've had a delightful evening of wrapping presents and visiting with my oldest daughter who's just arrived home from college. After we finished with the wrapping, I kept my Christmas Eve tradition of twenty-four years, as I sat down with my children (ages 24, 21, and 17) and read the Christmas story from the second chapter of Luke. I began doing that when my oldest was a newborn, 24 years ago, and it's a special tradition we always do on Christmas Eve. The most important reason we read that story each year, though, is to remember and focus on WHY we are really celebrating Christmas. We all get so busy during the holiday season and need to make the time to stop and think about that wonderful miracle of the Christ Child's birth so many years ago. It truly was a miracle and the most wonderful, joyous event we could ever celebrate! ~ And speaking of miracles--although this is a much smaller one--my Christmas Cactus has bloomed for the very first time since a friend gave it to me 3 years ago! I was thrilled when I noticed the tiny buds a few weeks ago, and then those buds turned into gorgeous blooms. Although the plant had remained green, it would never bloom. Then suddenly this year it presented me with a beautiful gift as it was covered in red blooms! For me, that was a "miracle" that blessed me as I prepared for Christmas.

OUT OF HER HANDS

I recently read a great book by Christian author Megan DiMaria, Out of Her Hands. I haven't read many books from the main character's point of view, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one! ~ Out of Her Hands is the story of Linda Revere, a middle-aged wife and mom to a teen daughter and a college-aged son. Changes are happening in Linda's family, and being a loving mom, she wants to help control matters so things will go smoothly and everyone will be happy. But Linda realizes there are many situations over which she has no control, and she must trust the Lord to be in control and give her a sense of peace. ~ The characters in the story are so believable, and being a middle-aged mom myself I could definitely relate to many of Linda's feelings and emotions! There were parts of the story that brought tears to my eyes, and other parts where I was laughing out loud. I highly recommend reading Out of Her Hands by Megan DiMaria, and I look forward to more books by this talented author.

* * Megan has also written a previous book about the Revere family, Searching for Spice, which I haven't read yet (but I plan to!). You do not have to read it before reading Out of Her Hands.

Miracle, Kentucky

I just finished reading a wonderful book by Christian author Andrea Boeshaar, Love Finds You in Miracle Kentucky. I love the way Andrea writes - - she was one of the first authors I read when I "discovered" Christian fiction several years ago! ~ Love Finds You in Miracle Kentucky is a well-written, sweet story about a young woman seeking a fresh start in a different town (and state). She accepts a teaching position and moves in with her grandmother in Kentucky. One of her students is a precious child confined to a wheelchair, who just happens to have a handsome, widowed father. Their relationships and experiences are written about in a very believable way, and the story was never boring! As Meg (the main character) is able to strengthen her family ties, she truly finds love in Miracle, Kentucky. ~ I enjoyed this story so much, and now I'm looking forward to reading more stories in the new "Love Finds You.." line from Summerside Press!

Giving Thanks

Happy Thanksgiving! I've been reading lots of blogs and articles recently about giving thanks and how much we have to be thankful for. This is so true, and I truly realize how very blessed I am. The Lord has given me so many blessings that I know I do not deserve, but I'm so very thankful to Him. At the top of the list would be my precious family and friends, but the list could go on endlessly. ~ ~ What I want to make sure to do, however, even after this Thanksgiving holiday is past, is to continue having a thankful heart each and every day. I need to make sure I give thanks to my Lord daily for all of my wonderful blessings---even if it's a day that doesn't seem too "special" when I'm in much physical pain, or things don't seem to be going my way---I still have so much to be thankful for even during those times! ~ ~ At our family dinner today, I'll read aloud Psalm 100 just as I have since I was a young girl (my precious Mother started me on this family tradition many years ago, and although she and Daddy are in Heaven now, it's a tradition I want to continue). ~ ~ Thank you, Lord for blessing me abundantly!!

Meeting A President!

One evening last week my oldest sister wanted several of us to meet for dinner at a nice restaurant in Atlanta. She wanted to celebrate having her house all paid off (which is certainly something for anyone to celebrate!). We had been seated at our table for about fifteen minutes when we noticed a couple being escorted to the table right next to our table. It was former President Jimmy Carter and his lovely wife Rosalyn!! I couldn't believe it, because at that very moment my teen-aged son was at home....writing a report on.....JIMMY CARTER !! I was so excited that I could hardly eat my delicious meal (although I did "force myself" to eat - LOL!!).

When President Carter's daughter Amy walked by my chair, I discreetly asked her if there was any way that she could snap a quick picture of her Dad for my son (and I explained about my son's report on President Carter). She said she'd ask him, and a minute later she turned back around to me and said that her Dad wanted me in the picture too! So I stooped down by his chair for a quick picture. He was so kind and gracious, and I was THRILLED!! (and thankful the Secret Service didn't come over and grab me.....they were nearby and very watchful!). I've posted the picture of Jimmy Carter and me (he was looking down at me, because the flash cameras bother his eyes). ~ What an exciting dinner!

HE Hasn't Changed !

With all the "drama" relating to the recent elections, there has been much talk and concern about our country's future. Many people are wondering what changes will take place regarding our economy, our military, and the list goes on and on. Some people are hopeful, others are downright worried and even scared. ~ As Christians we know we need to pray for our country, and we know WHO is in control. But with all this talk of changes, something else we must do is remember that our Lord does not CHANGE!! He has always been there for us, and always will be. He has the ultimate control, not political leaders. So when I'm feeling overwhelmed, I need to stay focused on the truth of the Bible verse in Hebrews that reminds me: Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today, and forever.

VOTE !!

On this much anticipated Election Day, I hope everyone has voted (or is planning to vote today). This is such an important part of being an American citizen, and not to be taken lightly. ~ ~ This particular Presidential race has been the most "anxiety-filled" one I have ever lived through (in my many years-LOL!) and so much is at stake for our great country. ~ ~ Feeling strongly about my choices and beliefs (particularly being anti-abortion and knowing we MUST always defend Israel) I, like many others, have fretted about "what ifs". What if the other candidate wins? What will happen to our precious country then? ~ ~ I've decided to focus on the Bible verse in John 14:1, as this reminds me WHO is really in control. ~ ~ May God always bless America!

A "Purr"-fect Day!

Although I love all four seasons, Autumn is my very favorite. The cooler temperatures and the beautiful leaves turning crimson, yellow and orange always give me a little "burst" of energy this time of year. This week here in my part of Georgia, we have had some beautiful weather!! It's the kind of weather that "just makes you feel good" when you go outside. I walked to the mailbox the other day and couldn't help but notice the brilliant blue sky, a cool breeze blowing, sun shining, and lots of birds twittering to me as I walked along my driveway. ~ I'm reminded of the Bible verse that says: The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handiwork. (Psalms 19:1) ~ ~ I've posted a picture of two of my kitties, Levi and Moses, as they sit by a window to enjoy the day's beauty!

WHERE THE HEART LEADS

Each time I read a book by Christian author Kim Vogel Sawyer, I decide that particular book is my favorite. Now I think I have truly found my very favorite book by Kim, Where the Heart Leads. Taking place in the early 1900s, this book tells the story of a young man with Mennonite roots who must make some major decisions in his young life. I enjoyed this book so much that when I finished reading the last chapter, I didn't want it to end! Kim makes her characters "come alive" and the settings so real that it's easy to imagine you are there. Kim also weaves a spiritual message throughout the story, adding so much to the story without "preaching a sermon". ~ ~ I highly recommend Where the Heart Leads and, although I don't usually re-read books (who has time?!), I want to read this one again!

* * NOTE: At a Christian writers conference I recently attended, I had the honor and pleasure of meeting Kim IN PERSON and also taking a workshop from her! WOW !! This lady is precious! She was so kind to me, and was also a wonderful workshop instructor (not to mention at the Banquet she won ANOTHER Award!!). * * You will be blessed when you read her books.

ACFW Conference

On September 18 my oldest daughter and I flew to Minnesota so I could attend my very first writers conference, American Christian Fiction Writers. What an amazing experience! I learned so much, made so many new friends, and met my VERY favorite Christian authors. The picture above is me with Deborah Raney and Tamera Alexander, two awesome authors and now my friends! Meeting these ladies was wonderful, and they were so kind and encouraging.

September Already?!

Wow! I cannot believe that September is here already! This particular month has always been a busy one for my family....we jokingly refer to it as our "Family Birthday Month" due to so many birthdays. It makes for a fun, although hectic, few weeks! This September will be extra-busy for me since I'm planning on attending the American Christian Fiction Writers' Conference in Minnesota (which I'm so excited about!). I need to make sure though, that no matter how busy my days are, to always start out my day by spending some quiet time with the Lord. I've always found that my days just seem to go better when I do this. That sure doesn't mean my days will be trouble-free, but at least I can handle those trials better when I've started the day out with some time in the Word. ~~ It's so easy to get caught up in the rushing and busyness of our schedules, but we all need to take time to read our Bible and reflect on the blessings the Lord has given us. ~~ I've posted a picture of my kitten Delilah, as she looks reflective while resting on my piano bench!

Left-handed People Celebrate!

Today (August 13) is National Left-handers' Day ! Being a left-handed person, I always try to remember that this is "our special day" each year. However, very few people are aware that we lefties even have a special day, so I take it upon myself to remind others each year. I don't know who started it, or when it was started, or even how August 13 was determined to be THE special date for lefties, but several years ago I discovered it on a calendar and made a point to remember the date! Being a left-handed person is not easy. I remember way back in college taking a golf class....I was the only lefty in the class, so the instructor always had to "reverse" his demonstrations for me. Same thing with other activities too (tennis,etc.). For me personally, the most "annoying" thing is when I write with ink and my little finger ends up with ink after I'm finished writing (from dragging along the words I've just written). I've heard it said that "it's not a left-handed world" and I agree....most things are geared to right-handed people, since they are the majority. But I've also heard it said that "left-handed people are creative and special" and I LOVE that saying! So if you're a lefty, enjoy this special day, and we'll just be thankful we have hands to use....no matter how awkward things can be sometimes!

A NEW BABY and WISDOM TEETH

Originally I thought this week would be a "typical" summer week with our usual activities. Then our oral surgeon's office had a cancellation so my son's wisdom teeth were able to be removed this morning (it's a great relief to get that done while school is out!). Thankfully the procedure went well and there were no problems pulling all four teeth. ~ AND....my niece/Godchild Ginger gave birth to a precious baby girl (Isabelle) yesterday afternoon, so we are thrilled! We thought the baby would not arrive until early August (or the very end of July) but she decided to make her appearance July 23. What a blessing to have a healthy baby - - Thank you Lord! ~ We never know what a week will hold, but we do know Who holds our week in His hands. And because of Him, I really don't need to dread or worry about things (although I still do sometimes). If I will just remember to trust in the Lord, He will guide me through whatever a week may hold. (Proverbs 3:5)

LEAVING NOVEMBER

Each time I read another book by Deborah Raney, it reminds me why she is one of my VERY favorite authors! Deb writes in such a way that it is easy to be "swept into" the story, and I feel that I am actually there and listening to the characters speaking. Deb has a series of 3 books that take place in fictional Clayburn, Kansas. I read the first one last year, REMEMBER TO FORGET. I loved that story and eagerly awaited the second book, LEAVING NOVEMBER. I just finished reading it, and LOVED IT!! In this story, the messages of putting the past behind us and moving forward with God's help are shown with true-to-life characters and situations, all set in a cozy little town I would love to visit (if it weren't fictional!). Now I can't wait to read Deb's third Clayburn book....and any other Deborah Raney books I can get my hands on! I highly recommend LEAVING NOVEMBER for an enjoyable, inspiring read.

Summer Days

I hope everyone is having a safe, fun summer. It's hard to believe that July is almost here! In spite of the heat and humidity where we live (Georgia) there are some great things about summer in my state. One of my favorites is the juicy Georgia watermelons - - yum! Another great thing about summer in Georgia is all the beautiful flowers and plants that grow in our state. The magnolias and gardenias are so fragrant, and due to the humidity, usually ferns grow well too (if not out in the direct sun). This year I have 2 hanging baskets of Hibiscus, which I am enjoying. They are a lovely shade of orange, and I'm doing my best to keep them alive - LOL!! May your summer days be blessed with family time and fun.

CONTROLLING INTEREST

While on my wonderful family vacation last week at the Georgia coast, I read the book Controlling Interest by Elizabeth White. I had not read any of her previous books, and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this fast-paced story! The book's action, sprinkled with humor and romance, kept me turning pages until after midnight (one evening I even read instead of participating in the family games for that night*gasp*). Most importantly, though, is the faith message in the book. The believable characters are certainly not perfect, but they strive to have a closer walk with the Lord and find out that He is with them no matter how bad the situation looks. I highly recommend Controlling Interest and look forward to reading more of Beth's books!

Today is the birthday of one of my VERY favorite Christian authors, Deborah Raney. Happy Birthday Deb! I'm praying the Lord's blessings on you today and everyday, and I hope this coming year will be a wonderful one for you.

Deb is an awesome Christian writer and I LOVE her books. Her first novel, A VOW TO CHERISH, inspired a movie of the same title! Many of her books have won awards, and I'm looking forward to reading ALL of them! So far, my favorite Deborah Raney book is PLAYING BY HEART (and not just because it has a picture of a CAT on the cover!!).

Since Deb lives in Kansas, we've never met "in person," but I'm hoping to meet her this September at a Christian writers conference in Minnesota. (I know I'll like her a lot--she's a "cat person" too!).

If you've never read any of her books, you need to find some at your local bookstore - - you won't be disappointed. (she has NO idea I'm dedicating my blog to her today....hope she'll be surprised!) : )

Movies, Monkeybread, and Monopoly

Please allow me to share a "Mom musing" with you! Anyone who is a mom of "older" kids (teens or college-aged) can certainly relate to this. As our children get older and busier, we find that they are away from home more often, which is part of them gaining their independence. But I just happen to be the kind of mom who LOVES having all my kiddos at home! Okay, maybe I thrive on chaos....but anyway, this mother hen is happiest when her chickadees are all gathered in the nest. These past two weeks my middle child, Becca, was at home before leaving for her summer job at a Christian camp (in another town, living with a host family). Oh, how much I enjoyed spending time with my Becca....we watched old movies, baked yummy "Monkeybread" and played the classic board game, Monopoly....and I LOVED every minute of those simple activities!! ~ I am so very thankful the Lord has blessed me with my three children, and although I have "yearned" at times for the days when they were little, He is showing me just how wonderful EVERY age can be!

COURTING EMMA, An AWESOME Book!

I have just finished reading Courting Emma by Sharlene MacLaren and it was AWESOME! This is the first book I've read by this author, and I can honestly say that I am now a Sharlene MacLaren fan, and can't wait to read more of her books! Although I had not read the previous two books in the Little Hickman Creek series, I had no problem at all learning about the town and the characters. In fact, Sharlene's writing "transported me" back in time to that small Kentucky town, and I felt I was actually meeting the townspeople. As I read Courting Emma I had tears at some parts, laughed out loud(really!) at some parts, and felt a warm, joyous feeling as I read how peoples' lives can be changed when they accept Christ into their hearts. As an avid reader, I highly recommend this book, and now am very eager to read Sharlene's other books!

Wow! I cannot believe the month of May is here already! Since Mother's Day is in May, hopefully all of you with mothers who are still living will make it a very special day for them. That holiday is a little sad now for me, since my precious Mom is in Heaven. But I still will enjoy the day with my own children, so that's a blessing! ~ The stray cat who "adopted" me is having her first Mother's Day (*grin*)....the precious kittens will be nine weeks old tomorrow, and are cuter than ever! Her children arise up, and call her blessed. Proverbs 31:28

An Amazing Friend

I am blessed with so many friends...and I treasure all of them! Today is my friend Lisa's birthday so I'm dedicating my blog today to her. She is truly amazing. Last year on Easter morning Lisa's husband passed away suddenly (he had many health problems but his death was unexpected). Needless to say, Lisa and her two teen-aged sons were devastated. I can only imagine how difficult this past year has been for Lisa, BUT she has done so well and I'm so proud of her!! The reason Lisa has done so well is that she has Christ in her life (she will tell you this) and He sustains her. I'm sure it has been so challenging for her to suddenly find herself as a single parent, working outside the home, and she is also working on her college degree. She could have easily thrown her hands up in discouragement....but she keeps going...and usually with a smile on her face!! I'm sure the Lord will continue using her to minister to others who are faced with sorrow and she can be a "shining light" for His mercy and grace. Happy Birthday Lisa! You are amazing and a special friend. Love you!!

Spring Blessings

Since I'm no longer teaching school, my days are not so hectic and I can "stop and smell the roses" so to speak. I've been noticing how beautiful our Georgia weather has been lately and also how beautiful our trees and plants are! Sure, I've always loved the trees and flowers, but this year I have more time to truly enjoy their beauty. I'm so thankful the Lord created the Spring season and all the blessings we enjoy in this season. ~ I'm also thankful that one day I'll see my precious Mother again...yesterday was the three-year anniversary of her passing, but I KNOW she's in Heaven....so even though I still miss her terribly here on earth, I have the blessing of knowing we'll be together again one day!! Thank you Lord!!!!

Tubby's "Travels"

My 12-year-old cat, Tubby, "escaped" today and headed for the woods behind our house. Tubby is a house-cat and such a sweet boy. But what alarmed me about him being outside is the fact that he is deaf. We just noticed this past year that his hearing is gone (bless his furry heart). I was so nervous all day and was planning to put notes on my neighbors' mailboxes about him. Fortunately late this afternoon my daughter Becca saw him at the edge of the woods and was able to grab him (after about 45 minutes!). Thank the Lord Tubby is now safe back inside our house, where he belongs! For any pet-lovers out there, you know how scary something like this can be.

Here in Georgia it is definitely SPRING!! (although our weather acts goofy!). The trees and azaleas have been gorgeous...just more reminders of God's blessings. Our four kittens and four cats are keeping me sooo busy, but they are all precious! I'm posting a pic of Moses, the kitten with the MOST energy!
